Kreativiti & Inovasi

CREATIVITY is a mental & social process involving the generation of new ideas or concepts, or new associations between existing ideas or concepts, fuelled by conscious & unconscious INSIGHT. Simply put, it is the making of something new, with both ORIGINALITY and APPROPRIATENESS.

But the seemingly simple concept, is actually quite complex. For how does one start to create? Is it simply out of necessity (being the mother of invention) or out of the need to express one's self in a tangible way?

Creativity has been said to come from divine intervention, cognitive processes, the social environment, personality traits, and chance (accidental, serendipity), being associated with genius, mental illness and humour. History has numerous examples to quantify all these.

Many believe creativity is a trait we are born with (NATURE), others say it can be taught (NURTURE). It is probably somewhere between the two for nurture can bring out hidden talents of one's nature.

Although commonly associated with ART & LITERATURE, creativity is is also the essential element of INNOVATION & INVENTION, necessary in areas like business, economics, architecture, industrial design, science & engineering.

THE CREATIVE PROCESS Graham Wallas, in 1929 published 'The Art of Thought' and came up with this model :

1. PREPARATION - by focusing & exploring the problems dimension

2. INCUBATION - problem is internalised into the unconscious mind, nothing appears to be happening externally

3. INTIMATION - getting a 'feeling' that a solution is on the way

4. ILLUMINATION - creative idea bursts forth from preconscious processing into conscious awareness

5. VERIFICATION - idea is consciously verified, elaborated and then, applied
